AFTER WORLD CAM is an immersive audio/video installation and live broadcast in which viewers become inhabitants of a virtual nature preserve set in a speculative future where humans no longer exist, yet technology persists. Inspired by Ray Bradbury’s prescient short story, There Will Come Soft Rains, AFTER WORLD CAM is comprised of several different video pieces depicting surveillance camera views, set inside a lush simulated nature preserve. Flourishing in the wake of human extinction, the nature preserve’s cam views often reveal what appears to be errors or glitches in the simulation, however, as the camera exists within a digital diegesis, these perceived irregularities are in fact quite mundane in this speculative future.
As the viewer traverses the space, they become part of the simulation. A surveillance cam captures their movements from the back of the room, and they see themselves looking out into the nature preserve, which is then live-streamed. When no users are physically present, an organism roams the space. A speaker plays a looping audio piece and a humidifier/oil diffuser furthers the primordial ambiance.
