V1 is a portrait of one’s selves.
The video V1 asks where do we end, and the world as we know it begin? V1 is an abstract video portrait of a woman as portrayed by her DNA data and the digital data from a photo she took. We see the suggestion of a person co-mingled with their imagination.
At one point in the ambient loop, the sitter’s DNA fills the sky behind her photo with marks that suggest the infinite expanse of stars. Digital art is creating new kinds of pictures, but it is also developing new collaborative experiences for artists and art lovers who can now work together to create with one another’s minds.
The creation of this art required a mind-merge between the generative artist James Pricer and his AI tools. Pricer interpreted the sitter’s data, and AI used that data as the bases for color choices, for example. Generative art driven by data is abstract art with an underlying meaning. We know that reality is driving the non-representational imagery and we intuitively find patterns and stories no matter how abstract the picture.
Seeing what we are made of abstracted allows for a wider interpretative experience. It brings up the question of where we begin and end, as seen in the portrait V1. Our changing ability to sense the seen and unseen world also changes what we want to see and know about ourselves and the data we create.
