25 famous faces emerging from Dutch paintings is a video based artwork that utilizes the pixel-bleeding or “datamosh” technique to create surrealistically jarring yet beautiful portraits of several of the most famous pop stars of the past half decade.
In the work 25 famous faces seem to emerge from several Dutch paintings, the figures appear and disappear as a ghostly apparition, as if they are haunting the work in which they appear. Each “apparition” last only for a few moments and then restores itself into the background, all at different durations of time from one another. Each frame is time stretched to represent the amount of time it takes for each face to emerge from the painting correlates with the to their career span of each individual icon.
The Dutch paintings belong to the rock stars of the art world during the golden age of Dutch painting such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Vermeer. Both the Dutch painter and the modern pop star create a juxtaposition of the Self Determination Theory, which addresses human motivation through the lens of “extrinsic” life aspirations of each artist in the work whereas artists who possess extrinsic goals focus on material success, fame and wealth…whether in life or death.
