A Brief History of Video Gaming curated by Sharifa Moore, Denver Digerati Education Director
Supernova’s compilation towards a history of video gaming originated in the desire for a visual narrative presented through short gifs of video game play. Samples stem from the inception of gaming consoles, produced for home use, and their evolution up to the present day. Idiosyncratic glitch gifs were also included from early games as a nostalgic throwback to the experience of using these early systems and the inevitable experience of cartridge damage. Initially, the top ten best-selling games on each console was used as the foundation for inclusion, but was extended to include games prized by avid gamers as identified through research in gaming forums and through homages to these games found on Tumblr. The compilation supports this year’s emphasis on the intersection of video gaming and digital animation, both through dynamic visual representation, as well as the widespread use of gaming engines in the creation of animation today.
